DAVID JONES/JOE GREEN MEMORIAL DAY

The Annual Memorial Day for the two N.U.M. men who were killed on the picket lines in 1984 took place on Saturday, 10th March in Barnsley. The attendance was very good with the Miners' HaIl well filled to hear the Memorial Lecture, which this year was given by Paul Kenny, General Secretary of the G.M.B. He gave an excellent address and confirmed his place as one of the most progressive T.U. leaders.

Afterwards the Barnsley Trades Club was packed as everyone went down to enjoy the informal social which is now a well established event.

Both Ian Lavery and Steve Kemp, top officials of the N.U.M., together with Paul Kenny, enjoyed the afternoon and everyone was delighted when members of the North Staffs Miners' Wives Group sang the Women Against Pit Closures anthem "We Are Women We Are Strong". In addition the stall and raffle raised a considerable sum of money for our victimised men.

Everyone is now looking forward to next year's event at what has now become a very popular day for both members of the mining community and other trades unionists and supporters.
