Strike Books

What follows is just a brief selection of the countless books and pamphlets that were published either during or just after the strike. Most will be out of print by now unfortunately but some should be available in local libraries. Hundreds of books and pamphlets appeared for fund raising purposes during the dispute but also to tell the story of the strikers themselves, free of the bias, evasion or outright lies of the media and government.

The Enemy Within - MI5, Maxwell and the Scargill Affair; Seumas Milne. Published 1994. Tells the story of the surreal attempt by Robert Maxwell's Daily Mirror in 1990 to smear Arthur Scargill and Peter Heathfield. All the charges of financial irregularities during the strike were conclusively refuted, and Roy Greenslade, editor of the Daily Mirror at the time, later made a full apology. The English Civil War Part II: Personal accounts of the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike; Jeremy Deller. Initiated by artist Jeremy Deller, The Battle of Orgreave was a partial re-enactment of one of the most violent clashes between striking miners and police during the 1984-85 miners’ strike. The original standoff took place on 18 June 1984, the re-enactment some seventeen years later, on 17 June 2001.

The English Civil War Part II contains a series of personal accounts by people who were all in different ways involved with the strike and the re-enactment. The texts are accompanied by a wealth of images, pamphlets, news clippings, photos from personal scrapbooks, song texts, and a selection of photographs of the re-enactment. The accompanying CD contains over an hour of interviews with former miners and their wives.
