This shows the aft well deck, or cockpit.. Note the twin horns on the bollards. These are used in locks to avoid ropes jamming The bulkhead at the rear of the cockpit is watertight. In the event of stern damage, no water will enter the engine-room The two hatches give access to the steering gear

The barge is now fully functional. A temporary
dashboard
holds the instruments. You can see the
electrical distribution boards, inverter and isolation
transformer on the bulkhead. The steering wheel has
been removed.

This shows the gearbox connected to the propeller
shaft via the aqua-drive unit. All the thrust from the
propeller is taken by the plate-work onto which it is
mounted. This ensures that there is no vibration or
trouble with aligning the engine to the shaft

There is a 6 cylinder Perkins diesel fitted. Behind it
you can see the central heating boiler and storage
cylinder. There is good access to the engine. It is
important to be able to move freely around the
engine when servicing it.

Here are the main battery isolation switches
and fuses. To the right of the picture you can
see the Northern lights enerator. The black
pipes are the exhaust pipes for the main engine
and generator.

The bottom of the accommodation area has been
painted ready to accept the ballast.
Electrical conduits have been laid and in the
fore-ground you can see the holding tank and the
pump used to empty it. This cannot be used on
inland waterways.

The steel-shell for this 19•5m barge has been competed in our workshop at Rendlesham and floated into the barge harbour where we are nowIn the harbour at Woodbridge completing the fit out. We have already finished the external paintwork and work will soon start on the internal fit-out.

We would be pleased to show you around our workshops and harbour.

The following pictures are updated regularly, so you can see work progressing on this barge which is called ‘Butterscotch’, owned by Mr and Mrs Breston. They will be keeping the barge here with us after it has been completed.
